Manjusri (which means Gentle Glory or Sweet Splendor) is the personification of Transcendent Wisdom, and one of the two most important Bodhisattvas of Mahayana Buddhism Manjusri is in fact the first Bodhisattva mentioned in the Mahayana scriptures. He is usually depicted handing a sword (to cut ignorance) and the stem of a lotus blossom bearing the Prajnaparamita Sutra (the scripture of the Perfection of Wisdom). Sometimes, as in this design, those are represented by two lotus blossoms in the background while Manjusri sends his blessings with mudras (hand gestures).
A Bodhisattva is a compassionate enlightened being who gladly accepts to be reborn on earth in order to help other beings make progress toward enlightenment. Manjusri helps to destroy falsehood and ignorance to achieve liberation.
